The adoption process today provides a birth mother with several options. It’s critical for your emotional health to take the necessary time to formulate the right plan for you and your child.
At Texas Christian Adoptions, we will work closely with you to ensure you understand the process and your choices. As the birth mother, you are in control. We promise to prioritize your needs above all else.
Creating Your Personalized Adoption Plan
As you’ve come to grips with the fact that you are unexpectedly pregnant, now is the time to determine your next steps. If you decide that placing your child for adoption is best, it’s time to begin the process, but just as no two women are the same, their adoption plans should also be unique.
Here are some of the choices you have to personalize your adoption plan:
1. Choosing the Type of Adoption Plan
There are three types of adoption plans: open, semi-open, and closed. Each determines the amount of communication you want to have with the adoptive family and your child.
Open.
In an open adoption, you and the adoptive family exchange some identifying information. You can communicate with one another directly either by mail, email, or phone calls. You can also arrange in-person visits.
Semi-Open.
A semi-open adoption, also known as mediated, is when you communicate with the adoptive family. However, a third party handles all contact. This option provides everyone with a little more privacy.
Closed.
Very few adoptions are completely closed today, but if you need total anonymity, it is a valid choice. You have no contact with the adoptive family, and the courts seal all adoption information.
2. Choosing the Adoptive Family
Choosing the family that raises your child is a critical step in creating a personalized adoption plan. What’s important to you should be important to them.
Our counselors will work closely with you to discuss your “gotta haves.” They’ll be able to show you the profiles of potential adoptive couples that closely match what you are looking for.
You can even go online to view waiting couples hoping to adopt.
3. Deciding Whether to Meet Before Giving Birth
It’s up to you. If you would like to begin building a relationship with the adoptive family
you’ve selected before giving birth, we can arrange it. We recommend getting to know one another as soon as possible, but you let us know what you are comfortable with.
4. Crafting a Personalized Hospital Plan
Your counselor will work closely with you to develop a complete delivery plan. You decide what you are most comfortable with. We can arrange for the potential adoptive couple to meet you at the hospital, or they can come after you leave.
You can choose how much time you want to spend with your baby at the hospital, if you want to take photos with the adoptive family, and how the adoptive family meets your child.
