Choosing an adoptive family can be the most crucial part of the process. Many potential adoptive families are waiting to be matched with you. So, how do you go about choosing one? It’s essential to narrow down what matters to you and what kind of future you envision for your child.
Choosing a reputable licensed adoption coordinator who listens to and understands your needs is vital to match you with the right family. At Texas Christian Adoptions, we can help.
How Are Adoptive Couples Approved?
There is an extensive approval process that makes a family eligible and approved. Here are a few things each adoptive family must do:
- All couples are required to have a Home Study, which ensures their home and other family members are ready to receive a baby.
- Have extensive background checks, including criminal and sexual abuse checks and fingerprinting.
- Provide medical and financial records.
- Provide referrals from friends who have known them for a significant amount of time.
- Answer questionnaires about their history, family, mental and physical health, and marriage.
- Create a family bio with photos and a letter to potential birth parents. And some families provide a video as well.
Choosing an Adoptive Family
Every adoptive family is unique, just as every birth mother is unique. Before selecting a family, consider what is most important to you. You will get detailed profiles of prospective families, helping you learn about their values, lifestyle, parenting philosophy, and more. Consider the following:
- Do you have shared values? Do you want a family with similar religious, ethical, and cultural values?
- Communication preferences? Are you comfortable maintaining a relationship with the family post-adoption? Does it feel like a natural fit?
- What is their parenting style? Do you like their parenting style? (this is also discussed during the match meeting)
- Their location: Do you prefer to live close by or far away? It’s entirely up to you. All of our families reside in Texas.
When developing an adoption plan with a reputable agency or adoption specialist, you will get to create a list of these must-haves before choosing a family. You can also meet and ask the adoptive family further questions if needed to ensure they’re a good fit.
