Women who place their children for adoption know there is pain that comes with this decision. They love their children and want the best for them, but that love is why making an adoption plan is emotionally painful. They wonder, “How will I feel after I place my child with their adoptive family?”

More than anyone in the adoption experience, a birth mother needs counseling, support, and an outlet to express her emotions after placement. There is life and happiness after adoption, but it only comes with tremendous post-placement support.

Having Confidence in Your Decision

It is normal to question any major decision in life, especially when it impacts the lives of others. Feelings of doubt are natural for birth mothers. You instinctively want to protect your child and know they are safe and loved.

A national survey of birth mothers found that two main factors contributed to their satisfaction: the knowledge that they were receiving accurate information about the entire adoption process and the fact that no one coerced or manipulated them.

Every expectant mother and birth mother must fully understand their decision. They must receive comprehensive adoption counseling before any decision is made.

At Texas Christian Adoptions, we begin with our Expectant Mother Questionnaire. The goal is to get you thinking about whether adoption or parenting is right for you.

“I Feel so Alone”

Choosing adoption for your child is not only difficult, but it is also courageous. Many people do not understand adoption, and birth mothers feel the stigma placed on them by others. That stigma can cause you to feel isolated and unable to express your grief and pain openly.

Your choice may not be understood by close friends, family members, or even your partner, but there are other birth mothers ready to support you. Here are a few support groups you may want to consider joining:
